As expected, last night’s Federal Budget kept the Research and Development Tax Incentive (RDTI) on the benches. This was hardly a surprise.
The Budget itself was put together earlier than anticipated as Cyclone Alfred impacted on plans that may have been in place to call the Federal Election this month. In addition, the Strategic Examination of Research and Development (SERD) has yet to reach its submission closure date of 11 April. With those balls in the air, it would have not been sensible to look at any significant improvements or reforms to the RDTI.
Once the election dust settles and the SERD is getting stuck into its vital work, MJA will be advocating for the central role that the RDTI does play, and could better play, in the support of Australia’s private sector and collaborative R&D.
We look forward to the opportunity to canvass your views regarding the best ways by which the RDTI can meaningfully deliver its flagship government R&D support as we all look to a time when we can truly describe Australia as an innovation economy.
